Window & Vent Maintenance Tips for a Healthier Home

🪟 Window & Vent Maintenance Tips for a Healthier Home

Fresh air isn’t just a comfort — it’s a health essential. Poorly maintained windows and vents can lead to moisture buildup, dust, allergens, and even mould. With just a few simple habits, you can keep your ventilation systems working well and your home feeling clean and breathable. Here’s how.

🌬️ 1. Open Windows Daily (Even for 10 Minutes)

Letting in fresh air reduces humidity, clears out cooking smells, and improves mental clarity. Even in winter, a few minutes of ventilation can make a big difference.

🧼 2. Clean Window Tracks and Frames

Use a vacuum nozzle or soft brush to remove dust, pet hair, and pollen. Wipe down with a damp cloth and a mild disinfectant to prevent black mould on the seals.

🪟 3. Check Seals and Locks Monthly

Worn seals allow damp and cold in — and heat out. Make sure windows shut tightly and replace damaged rubber or silicone weatherstripping.

🔧 4. Inspect and Test Extractor Vents

Extractor fans in bathrooms or kitchens should be tested monthly. Hold a piece of toilet paper up to the vent — if it doesn’t stick, airflow is weak and may need cleaning or servicing.

🪣 5. Clean Vent Covers and Grilles

Dust and grease build up over time. Remove and soak covers in warm soapy water. Let them dry fully before replacing.

🧽 6. Check for Mould Around Vents

Vents can accumulate hidden condensation. Use a flashlight to inspect the area, and treat any signs of mould with anti-fungal spray.

🧰 7. Keep Vents Unblocked

Don’t block air bricks or wall vents with furniture or clutter. These passive vents help reduce internal humidity and are vital for older homes.

🌀 8. Consider a HEPA Filter or Dehumidifier

For homes with poor airflow, a HEPA purifier or electric dehumidifier can dramatically improve indoor air quality. Especially helpful in bedrooms and basements.

🧪 9. Monitor Humidity Levels

Use a hygrometer to check if humidity is above 60%. If so, improve airflow, check for leaks, and reduce drying clothes indoors where possible.

✅ 10. Create a Quick Monthly Checklist

Include items like “clean window tracks,” “wipe vents,” and “test fans.” Maintenance is easy when it becomes routine — and avoids costly future repairs.
