Same here. My place used to be packed with random trinkets and visual noise. I couldn’t figure out why it always felt cluttered, until it clicked that I didn’t actually own decent, basic essentials. I didn’t have a simple, matching set of cups, plates, or cutlery. My socks and underwear were a mismatched mess. My mattress, couch, coffee table, etc. were all cheap, half-hearted stand-ins instead of solid, reliable pieces.
I kept telling myself that the “real” versions of these things were too expensive, when really they’re long-term investments, and that mindset quietly made my life harder. To compensate, I’d bring in more and more small, random things to fill the gaps. Since I didn’t own one pair of jeans that went with everything, I avoided wearing a bunch of my clothes and would buy all sorts of little accessories to try to make outfits work, kind of like how I’ll rent a statement dress from Rent The Runway instead of owning five so-so ones.
Once I started putting money toward good, basic items, my space naturally got less cluttered and much easier to keep under control.
