Perhaps unsurprisingly, Richard E Grant has admitted that there are things he’d do differently if he were given his time in the Celebrity Traitors castle again.

Earlier this month, the Oscar nominee made Traitors history when he found himself at the centre of suspicion mere moments after being chosen as a Traitor when he outed himself to other members of the group in a botched double bluff.

The following day, they near-unanimously sent him packing in the only time on the UK show that the Faithfuls have ever been able to foil a Traitor at their first Round Table.

Speaking to the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire in an interview that aired on Sunday, the Withnail & I actor claimed he never expected to be taken “seriously” when he told his fellow contestants he was a Traitor.

“It was a completely catastrophically idiotic thing to do,” he conceded. “I can only imagine the faces of the producers looking at each other and mouthing ‘he said what?!’.”

He also claimed that his daughter warned him to be careful as he is so “incapable of hiding what you feel about people”.

“What I should have done in retrospect is go round everybody and say ‘are you a Traitor?’ ‘Yeah. I am a traitor’… ‘I am Spartacus. I am a traitor’ to try and make light of it,” Richard added, before pondering: “But that may have dug my grave even deeper.”

As Richard correctly predicted, executive producer Sarah Fay recently opened up about the team’s reaction to the British star’s blunder behind the scenes – admitting: “Never in our wildest dreams did we think that we’d have a Traitor admit they were a Traitor five minutes after the Round Table!”

Friday’s edition of The Celebrity Traitors ended on a cliffhanger, with Faithful cast members Ross Kemp, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan all gearing up for a potentially deadly game of hide and seek – as selected by remaining Traitors Maya Jama, James Acaster and Professor Hannah Fry.
